Fishing Montana's Lakes
Often overlooked in favor of the more famous rivers, Montana offers some excellent lake fishing. With everything from large reservoirs to high alpine ponds, there is something to please every stillwater angler. The lower elevation lakes provide opportunities for trophy fish, with many lakes and ponds featuring fish that average over 20". These fish can often be taken on dry flys, such as the famous "gulper" hatch on Hebgen and Ennis Lakes. In the high country, native Cutthroat Trout are often caught under spectacular alpine scenery. Some mountain lakes also feature opportunities for rare species like Grayling.
